Taking environmental performance into cyberspace
Cargo Network International is one of the first international freight forwarders to publicly share the environmental performances for vessels and aircraft used to transport merchandise around the world with the launch of the Carbon War Room’s new website: www.shippingefficiency.org
The website shows the estimated environmental performance of all vessels listed in the so-called Fairplay database, based on a design efficiency standard developed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). In addition to that, premium carriers such as Maersk Line have provided operational CO2 emission data according to the Clean Cargo Working Group standard for all of its owned vessels so that both design efficiency and operational efficiency will be available for such vessels.
The Carbon War Room’s new website is an important step in providing more transparency on the environmental performance of shipping lines. Progressive shipping lines state they would very much like to compete more on environmental issues in the future and carriers such as Maersk believe they are very well prepared to do so. The Carbon War Room is a non-governmental organization (NGO) that seeks to promote market-driven solutions to climate change, encouraging entrepreneurs to show leadership in this area.
